Not Caroline
New York Governor David Paterson has made his choice to fill in Hillary Clinton's vacant seat in the U.S. Senate and obviously he didn't go with Caroline Kennedy. Instead, he chose Congresswoman Kirsten Gillibrand to finish out the remainder of Clinton's Senate term. Kennedy dropped out for "personal reasons." From what I've heard, Kennedy dropped out because of her concern for her uncle Ted Kennedy's health or because she knew that Paterson wasn't going to choose her and she chose to drop out so it wouldn't look like she was being publicly rejected. I still think that Kennedy would have been a good pick to fill the Senate seat but I'm more curious to see where she goes from here. She claimed that the reason she was seeking the appointment was that Barack Obama inspired her to do more for the country. Well she wasn't picked. I want to know if she's going to consider a run for some type of political office. She got a feel for what she could expect from the press if she should actually go out and campaign for office. I do think it takes a certain kind of hubris to think that because of her lineage that she felt she was almost entitled to the seat. Kennedy sometimes came across like it was something due her. Maybe she honestly tried for the Senate seat out of some sense of wanting to help New York, I don't know. If she really wants to enter the political arena, she could maybe try running for the House of Representatives or local city government. Actually try building a political resume before trying to reach something like the U.S. Senate. I'm not criticizing her for throwing her hat into the ring. Why shouldn't she use whatever advantages she has as a Kennedy? What bothered me was hearing other politicians go after her. We all know that if the situation were reversed, we wouldn't have heard any of this complaining.
