Could It Happen?
This is the first time I've had a chance to wrap my head around the idea that the U.S. might be ready to elect a black man President. As I write this, Barack Obama is ahead in most polls by like 8 or 9 points over John McCain. I'm by nature a pessimist so I refuse to allow myself to believe that this nation with such a screwed up history of racism will actually elect a black man President. I firmly believe that somehow, the Republicans will find some way to steal just enough votes to drag McCain over the finish line as our next President. If that happens, the country is really gonna be in trouble. If something happens to McCain, we're gonna be stuck with Sarah Palin as President. If that thought isn't enough to send chills down your back, I don't know what will. We're still three weeks from Election Day and anything can happen but right now, it looks like Obama's gonna win this thing and big. I honestly think that the only reason Obama's as close to the presidency as he is is due to the magnitude, the sheer incompetence of George W. Bush's presidency. After eight years, people are so desperate for something, anything that isn't tainted by George Bush's legacy of idiocy that they're willing to vote for a black man. It's a sad state of affairs that this country is in. With two wars and an economy in major trouble, the country is in dire need of leadership. Barack Obama has positioned himself to be the leader that the U.S. needs in this time in our history. Whether he has the experience necessary to at least begin to dig the nation out of the hole that President Bush and his cronies have gotten us into remains to be seen. All I know is that after George W. Bush's poisoned presidency, things can't get any worse. Can they?
