Obama's Incredible Luck
So Barack Obama right now is on essentially a world tour of the Middle East and Europe. After John McCain pretty much taunted Obama to go to Iraq and see what conditions are like on the ground over there, once he arrived, the Iraqi President goes and gives what could very easily be considered an endorsement of Obama's 16 month plan to get the troops out of Iraq. Right now, if you look at McCain on the news or read his statements, you can tell he's ready to go ballistic. Obama's on his tour receiving the kind of adulation usually reserved for a president. Meanwhile, McCain's in the U.S. almost begging for media coverage. What's really galling McCain is that he was right about the surge. At a time when it was deeply unpopular to support putting more troops into Iraq, he stood by his guns and supported the surge and Bush. In the process, Obama now looks like a genius for having a 16 month plan to exit Iraq because it seems like the Iraqi government might be stable enough that it could be possible to finally get our soldiers out of there. The McCain campaign and the White House right now are caught between Iraq and a hard place. If the surge worked, why are we there? The more they look for a justification to remain bogged down in Iraq, the more the situation in Afghanistan deteriorates. We don't have enough soldiers to go where we're needed. Obama had a point about Afghanistan being the central front in the War on Terror. That's where Al-Qaida and Bin Laden are. Let's stop this sideshow in Iraq and focus on Afghanistan. More importantly, let's just try to last until January 20th, 2009. I don't pretend to know who's going to win the election but if the reception Barack Obama has been getting is any indication, we at least know where the rest of the world stands. Someone has to at least attempt to undo the damage George W. Bush and his cronies have inflicted on all of us. It may as well be someone who already has some goodwill built up.
